CLP hydraulic gantry Super1000 has been successfully used by Groupe Cayon for the assembly of the huge TBM “Federica” inside the new Frejus tunnel.
July 2016 , after a long and challenging assembly job the time come for the most thrilling operation: turn from horizontal to vertical and assemble the huge drilling head onto the TBM front section.
“Federica” is a large TBM manufactured by NFM for Spie Batignolles, the contractor of one of the most challenging tunnelling jobs in last years. The TBM will drill a total of 9 km of rock and install some tens of thousands concrete sections to create the new tunnel.
“Federica” is 130 meters long and weighs 1600 tons; the drilling head has a diameter of 11,26 meters and weighs 280 tons.
The assembly of the TBM required an extraordinary amount of equipment and man hours, working for months some 2 km inside the mountain core. CLP “Super1000” was the “primadonna” as it gave the possibility, for the Groupe Cayon crew, to perform the complete job safely.
The final step, assembly the drilling head, was a real challenge: the drilling head laid down horizontal on the ground and had to be turned vertical and then, once orthogonal to the TBM axis, moved into the final position … using two tower only.
CLP helped Groupe Cayon experts to figure out the equipment needed and designed and manufactures as well special beams to support the weight and the span required.
CLP Super1000 was probably the only hydraulic gantry able to do the job!
The final act of this amazing job was completed in 8 hours , safely. When the game gets tough…. Think at CLP!
